The Itemscat is a local statistical category that was migrated to Evergreen from Millennium. In Millennium, there were only numbers and no labels, so it was impossible to know what the numbers meant without referring to external lists for each library. Itemscats are added to item records as part of inputting can be used in reports and with the Booklist Generator.
On Evergreen, you can add meaningful text for each Itemscat value. You can completely replace the old numbers, or you can retain the old number as part of the description. For example, if the number 0100 was used for Adult Fiction, you might use one of the following labels:
- Adult Fiction (0100)
- 0100 Adult Fiction
- Adult Fiction
You can change these labels at any time without affecting the data in your records. After you update the labels for your itemscats, you need to log out and log in again to see them in your item records. It’s a good idea to work out a system for your new labels, change a few of them, and view and test the results. One thing to bear in mind is that the system sorts these alphabetically, treating numbers like letters. (That’s why these were padded with zeroes as part of the migration, so they would sort correctly.) When you are adding or editing the codes in item records using the dropdown, you can jump down by entering the first letter of a label. For example, if you start your labels with department names like Adult, Children’s, etc., hitting the letter C will jump you to the first of the Children’s labels.
To edit your labels, go to Admin –> Local Admin and choose Statistical Category Editor.
Click on the dropdown that shows the values for the Itemscat.
Click on the entry that you want to edit.
Edit the entry and click on Update Entry Value to save. The new entries will appear in the dropdown list on this screen as you edit them, but you must log out and log in again to see them in the dropdown in your item records.
